Since the creation of the IRA in 1974, designed as a self directed retirement plan, Americans have had the ability to invest their tax deferred retirement accounts in almost any asset of their choosing.  Rules governing the IRA were not meant to constrain investors to stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Modern Portfolio Theory tells us that diversification is a key component to a solid investment strategy, but a portfolio comprised of only traditional investment vehicles may not be sufficient to provide true portfolio diversification.

The SDRA follows the same rules and guidelines as any IRA or 401K regarding contributions, penalties, tax status, and distributions. Some firms offer SDRAs but typically limit the scope of investment products they offer. A true SDRA allows an almost limitless range of investments to be held in the account while deferring taxes on income and gains of the asset.
